Composition: What is it?
Every time you paint or draw a picture, you create a world that's all your own. It may be a sunlit landscape, a portrait, a bold abstraction. It may be fanciful or realistic, sad angry, amusing. It may be anything at all and in any style or medium.
Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the various elements at the painter's disposal for the expression of feeling. You compose your pictures in a way that you think best says what you feel.
When you think composition you usually think of shapes, but now you know its more than just the drawing. Shapes make up the majority of your composition and many artists choose the shapes in nature or even invent shapes of their own.
Janice has chosen to merge the arch shape with the natural foliage. A mix of circular and strait lines started this composition. Look beyond the obvious. Whenever you find a scene in nature that you would like to paint, be aware that it holds a wide variety of possibilities for picture compositions. When you plan your picture don't settle for your first impression. Look beyond the obvious, you'll find other, more interesting ways of interpreting your subject.
