Making your subject blend into the scene and creating a 3 dimensional effect can be challenging. In this walter color of an Artic fox in winter, I kept the color palette similar for the fox and background with exception of a pale off white wash on the animals pelt.
Strong contrast in shading with layers of color distinguish 3 dimensions of the fox. Lack of detail makes the foreground interesting and brings your focus to the subject.
To acheive depth and a sense of space in your paintings is easy. It requires a few basic techniques and a little creativity. Shading is the perspective of a light source. This is one way to achieve some of the effect. Depth can be achieved by reducing details in the background. This will draw the eye towards your paintings subject. Your subjects focus must be the most detailed part of the painting.
